Sayyida Sakina bint Hussain

This is a blog on the biography of Sayyida Sakina

Lineage

Her real name is Amina. She is the daughter of al-Husayn, the son of Ali, the son of Abu Taleb (may Allah be pleased with them all). Her mother is Rabab Bint Umri’ al-Qays. She was born in 47 AH and was named after her grandmother, the Prophet’sﷺ mother. Her mother, Rabab, nicknamed her Sakina because she was a source of peace and comfort to all her family members due to her merriness and liveliness.

Upbringing

Sayyida Sakina grew up at the house of the Prophet’s grandson and was very close to her father. She had inherited all the virtues and qualities of her ancestors. She faced extreme hardships throughout her life but faced them with patience and forbearance. Her generosity was a manifestation of her noble grandparents. She was the best of the noble ladies of her time and the nicest in mannerism. Sayyidah became one of the most respectable and honorable women of the Quraysh society because of her brilliant qualities.

Marriage

When she grew up, she was married with Muṣʿab ibn Zubayr, son of the well known companion Zubayr. From him, she had a daughter named Fatima. She earned widespread fame in her society for her outstanding morals and the care she provided her children and husband.

Attributes and Qualities

Sayyida Sakina enjoyed reciting the Holy Quran and never missed her prayers, even at a young age. She always made sure her head and face were covered in public. This is something women and young girls can implement in today’s time. They should be committed to their worships, wear modest clothing and read the Holy Quran regularly.

Female Leadership

During the time of the Prophet Muhammad and throughout the early and per-Islamic period, women were given a great sense of freedom and power. The wives of Muhammad, referred to as the Mothers of the Believers, were considered the ideal way for women in Islam to behave. Many of his wives and women within the early Islamic period were widely important in different leadership areas. Khadija bint Khuwaylid is considered the first convert to Islam, aiding the Prophet during the revelations and the tumultuous history of the early Islamic period. His wife Aisha bint Abi Bakr led an army in the Battle of the Camel. These women act as a role model for other young women.

Death

Sayyidah Sakina passed away in the city of Madinah when she was approaching 80. A really large number of Muslims came to her funeral.
